"Shalom" in Hebrew means "to destroy the authority attached to chaos" (shin, lamad, uau, mem). The power of life and death is in our tongue. When the word "shalom" comes off of our lips, we are literally commanding the destruction of chaos over our lives and the lives of those around us. Scripture speaks to how important our words are.
